Moorgate
![]() Moorgate location map
Situated south of Rotherham town centre, Moorgate takes its name from the toll gate that was situated on the approach to Rotherham until 1778.
Perhaps the first building of note to be found in Moorgate was Boston Castle, built in 1775, the castle was commissioned by the Earl of Effingham who sympathised with the Americans in their fight for independence. Apparently to show support for his colonial cousins he decreed that no tea should be quaffed in the castle. Around a century later the land was opened out and local factory owners and merchants soon realised the desirability of the area and Moorgate became what more than one Rotherham Estate Agent has described has Rotherham’s golden mile.
Although some of the grander homes have now disappeared the area is still much sought after, with the majority of accommodation being superior style detached and semi-detached housing which attracts a premium price. Amenities in Moorgate are wide ranging and below are a few examples.
