In the late 1800's Ravenfield was described as a picturesque parish, 4 miles NE of Rotherham containing 150 souls and 1170 acres of land. The village has a much longer history than this however and is reputed to have gained its name when the Danish standard was unfurled here in the 9th century. Ravenfield hall, Ravenfield Park and St James Church were the first buildings of note.

Modern day Ravenfield has a pleasant selection of housing including stone cottages, contemporary detached houses, bungalows, semi-detached houses and a few apartments-cum flats. As with many of the villages surrounding Rotherham, Ravenfield has a semi-rural setting but can boast good local amenities a selection of which are listed below;

Primary Schools;

Ravenfield Junior School

Secondary Schools

Thrybergh Comprehensive is about a mile away

Wickersley School and Sports College and

St Bernards Catholic High School are both within 3 miles

Transport;

The nearby A630 links Ravenfield to both Rotherham and Doncaster as well the A1M and the M18 motorways. Mexborough train station is approximately 2 miles distant and the new international airport at Doncaster is within 10 miles.

Health Care;

Ravenfield Surgery can be found locally on Hollings Lane and there are Dental practice in nearby Bramley and Dalton.

Leisure;

Rotherham Golf Club is situated on Doncaster Road about half a mile away from Fosters Garden Centre. Close by is Thrybergh Sports Centre which caters for many sports and there are many species of wild life to be observed on walks in the vicinity of Thrybergh Country Park and Firsby Reservoirs.

There are several pubs in the area along with nearby restaurants serving international cuisine that cater for a pleasant evening eating out.

Local Government;

Ravenfield falls under the auspices of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough

Described in 1868 as a parish in the S. division of Strafforth wapentake, West Riding county York, 4 miles N.E. of Rotherham, its post town, and 9 from Doncaster and Tickhill. The village is small, and wholly agricultural. It took its name from the erection of the Danish standard here during the northern incursions of that people in the 9th century. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of York, value £150. The church, dedicated to St. James, has a square tower containing six bells. The church was erected in 1756 on the site of the former one. The parochial charities produce about £32 per annum. There is a school for both sexes, partly maintained by T. B. Bosvile, Esq., lord of the manor. The principal residence is Ravenfield Park, formerly the seat of the Westbys and Bosviles.
