The name Thurcroft probably has Viking roots as 'thorr' means thunder in Old Norse, and so is at least 1,000 plus years old. Thurcroft Hall was built in 1699 and was almost certainly the first property of note in the Thurcroft area. At some time in the mid 1800’s the Marrian family became owners of the Hall and in 1909 they leased land to enable the opening of Thurcroft Colliery. This changed Thurcroft from a place where a handful of people lived to a community of 2000 people by 1923. ![]() thurcroft pic Today Thurcroft is a thriving village with ample affordable housing and also the opportunity to acquire superior housing often with views of open countryside... It is not every village that can boast such a rural setting and yet have such excellent transport links. With Junction 1 of the M18 being in such close proximity and also the A631, all major centre’s of South Yorkshire are within easy reach. Rotherham Central and Kiveton Bridge railway stations are within 5 miles as is Sheffield Airport. Other amenities to be found in the area are as follows; Primary Schools; Thurcroft Junior School Secondary Schools; Wickersley School and Sports College Dinnington College Both secondary schools are approximately 2 miles away but transport is provided. Shopping; There is good selection of shops to be found clustered round the centre of the village, these include a Post Office, Newsagents, Sandwich shop and Deli, several fast food outlets as well as an Auto Spares shop along with several convenience stores. The serious shopper has the Yorkshire Outlet, Meadowhall and Park Gate Retail World within easy driving distance. Leisure; Rother Valley Country Park has a variety of Water Sports, Golf and offers leisurely walks in pleasant surroundings and is about three miles away. There is a Riding School based at Thurcroft Hall and Dinnington public Swimming Baths are approximately two miles distant.Thurcroft also has the benefit of a Public Library. Eating Out There are many opportunities to sample worldwide cuisine in the surrounding area including American, Chinese, and Indian, Italian and Indonesian as well as a couple of excellent Steak Houses.
